I ride my bike 365 days a year. And for a third of that time, I'm dealing with temperatures that are over 100 degrees. I need a helmet that will be cool on my head, so I'm not sweating "bullets" by the time I get to the office, or faint from heat exhaustion while stopped at a traffic light. To solve the problem I purchased a novelty "beanie helmet" with the "pretend" DOT sticker on the back. That was stupid! First of all, by wearing that helmet, I was telling my family, my friends and the people I serve that my comfort and vanity was more important than they were. Let's face it, in an accident, a novelty helmet won't protect you one iota. Second, I was breaking the law. That's not being "above reproach". Plus it is saying that for some reason, I think I'm better than the rest of society, because some laws don't apply to me.
