The bags are very roomy and it does have a plastic like cardboard insert that I wish was molded plastic. But in all fairness, once you open the bag cover there is a second set of flaps that go lengthwise and are buttoned together for extra security. The one's I got have a zipper so you can un-zipper them from the the leather mount that goes beneath the seat. This is helpful when you don't want to unload your bags at your destination.
