The Prymal Urge Project
by Darren "RADMAG" Mortensen
The name PRYMAL URGE came about from months of soul searching while trying to create an idea for
a custom motorcycle project. I own a 1994 Honda Magna, the first year for the 3rd generation of
Magna. The Magna is one of the lesser known Honda cruisers.. The Magna was one of the original
muscle cruisers redsigned for the 1994 release.
The Honda Magna VF750C/CD is unique in its power plant. A liquid cooled 748cc 90-Degree V-4
engine united with four 34mm CV carburetors puts the MUSCLE in muscle cruiser!!! Weighing in at
just over 500 lbs., the power plant and chain drive give the Magna a screamin' launch from the
line! The Magna stands alone in a world full of V-Twin cruisers..but is NEVER left alone at the
My story begins with my stock Magna. A beautiful Yellow bike with ample stock Chrome
pieces...an eye catcher at the pumps. However, after a couple years I began to become bored with
the stock look and ride...so I did as any other rider would do...put it up for sale. Right? Well,
my luck it didn't sell...although I had many a looker! One day while surfin' the net I came
across the MAGNA RIDERS ASSOCIATION, a club suited for Magna owners such as myself. The most
interesting thing I saw was a few customized Magnas. My jaw must have hit my keyboard when I saw
what some of these fella's had done to thier bikes.
Never had I seen a Magna lowered, chromed and painted beyond stock! I studied these bikes day
and night. Learning all I could from the owners and their secrets. Suddenly, I found myself
obsessed with the idea of recreating my motorcycle. But , I had a problem. I really didn't know
anything mechanically about motorcycles. I had been a certified mechanic many years ago, but that
was only in cars and trucks...Since then I had become a Respiratory Practitioner in the Medical
I found nothing but encouragement from the people I had met on the net with custom bikes. So I
said "What the Hell!" From there I began working my ideas onto paper...sketching paint
schemes..fender shapes..and logging a budget for my creation. I searched and called all over the
country for qoutes on custom bike painting...this I knew would eat most of my budget! After I
finally had narrowed down my conception of my Magna, I called it the PRYMAL URGE.
The PRYMAL URGE is what riding is about to me. A primal instinct, or urge, we all have for
excitement. Excitement that comes from many sources. Fear, Speed and Sensual Desire, to name a
few. These are the characteristics of the PRYMAL URGE Magna, represented in the blue on yellow
animalistic markings..the tank adorned with the bust of a lightly clad female whose blouse is open
to blow freely in the wind, right down to the growl of open Jardine Drag 4 into 4 Drag pipes!
The URGE is also a creature of the night. With a 100 watt Halogen headlamp and two 50 watt
Halogen Yellow Fog Lamps to light the road. The frame and chrome are highlighted with six
individual 6" Yellow Neon and two 10" Yellow Neon lights, creating a ominous yellow glow along the
boulevard during nocturnal prowlings. This provides safety with high visibilty at night, and if
they can't see The URGE coming they will certainly hear her Dual Air Horns in matching blue!
The Magna is a difficult bike to customize I have come to find out due to the lack of
aftermarket accessories available. Through trial and error, we at the Magna Riders Association
have collectivily found many parts from the Honda Shadow, Suzuki Marauder and other bikes both
Metric and Domestic that can fit the Magna with little or no modification. This makes for great
fun in sharing ideas and finds with other Magna customizers!!!
I encourage everyone and anyone to get to know their machines...inside and out. Get to know how
it works and operates, after all you ARE trusting your life to it. I started my project a
motorcycle novice, now I consider myself well rehearsed in its operation. By learning how to
modify the suspension, the carburetion, the drive train, the electrical system and the cooling
system..I now know that machine inside and out!
Here is a brief list of modifications done to create The PRYMAL URGE:

Chroming the rear brake drum assembly. Adding a chrome chain guard from Planet Cruiser. 2003
will be a good year for The URGE as well. Dave Dodge of Dodge Racing Promotions (DRP,Inc.), the
leader in Honda V-Four racing will rebuild The URGE engine with DRP Racing components including
the newly developed DRP camshaft and cams, specific for the Honda Magna engine.
