What is EL

An electro-luminescent (EL) lamp is structured with a phosphor layer sandwiched between two electrodes; it functions electrically as a capacitor. When voltage is applied across the electrodes, the light generated from the phosphor is radiated through the transparent top electrode. EL lamps have extremely low power draw and generate no heat under normal operating conditions. EL lamps are flexible—they can bend to conform to a products’ shape and even operate while being flexed.

EL lamps are virtually shock-proof and are not subject to catastrophic failure. They’re thin—as thin as 0.008 inches, allowing them to provide light while using minimum space. Their soft, even light is completely non-glaring. You can use EL lamps with virtually any display technology—LCD, conductive rubber keypads, membrane switches, control and instrument panels, and more.
