Luggage Racks - A Saddlebags Best Friend

By Glenn Zetterquist (Zee331)

Lo! A luggage rack cometh to save my hide and buckles. – Overburdened Saddlebags

Hauling accessories and supplies on long trips is nothing new. Saddlebags have been around for ages. Before motorcycles they were strapped to horses and mules.

Sometimes the space provided in saddlebags isn’t sufficient to hold everything. You need extra space, but your passenger is filling up the rear seat, or you already have a travelling bag there. Do you have a passenger backrest? If so, then you’re in luck! If not, call our Customer Care team at 888-857-5417, we may still have a rack to fit your application.

Luggage racks give you the power to add MORE to your bike. Most racks support up to ten pounds of weight, and the actual weight may vary from brand to brand. A high number of them mount to specific passenger backrests like Cobra Engineering, Custom World International, MC Enterprise and National Cycle to name a few. Luggage racks come in different sizes and shapes. Some are permanent bolt-on, others are quick disconnect. All are worthwhile and give your bike extra luggage capacity and a bit of style to boot.

Here are some steps to follow when purchasing a luggage rack:

1) Determine what you are requiring the luggage rack to hold.
2) Consider any additional pieces you need to mount the luggage rack (ie backrest, mounting hardware).
3) Make sure you have the proper clearance to install the luggage rack. In most cases the rack will sit above and beyond fender. It doesn’t hurt to make sure.

Solo racks are unique in the way they do not require a passenger backrest and can still hold extra items. It’s very possible to mount a luggage bag on a solo rack the same way you can on a traditional luggage rack; however, we advise caution in doing so. Motherwell products makes an excellent solo rack that features a rear lip design that helps to cradle the luggage, giving it a more secure mount. Custom World International makes a sparkling line as well.

To give you some ideas on good luggage bags, we recommend check out the Kuryakyn Full Dresser Bag (part#KY-4140) and the Heavy Duty Expandable Sissy-Bar Pack with Duffel Bag Set . Both bags provide ample space to stow away a variety of items. The Kuryakyn dresser bag has a slight advantage based on its design as a luggage bag on wheels and a fold out arm used to pull it. The main compartment is a massive open space and comes with extra storage holders on the side.
