You can still hear the wind but it does not go right into your ear canal. You twist them until they get really small then when you put it in your ear it will expand to it's original size causing it to hold itself in. A must have if you use a skid lid. I wear the blue Hearos. I like the little case that comes with them to keep plugs clean. To use roll tip between your thumb and forefinger.
