They allow one to adjust their riding position to compensate for the uncomfortable stress the forward pegs place on the legs, on longer rides. For short rides i leave them up and flip them down only when I need them (i don't want to detract from the wicked nice look the forward pegs give on thier own). Easy install, took about 20 minutes (and I'm a slow mover). Nice chrome and look good on the bike. Nice to have on long rides and flip up for around town. I have ridden with just the forward controls for six years and the boards make such a big difference. It gives you more riding position options and is easier on your body during long rides. Chrome looks good on this and will flip up. When the boards are flipped up, they stick out a little too much for me to use the forward controls alone, so I just leave them down. Floorboards are not very large. Installation would have been easy had it not been for one of the chrome screws that was stripped on the forward controls. I highly recommend this item.
