Use painters tape to try different configurations without scratching the guard. When you find the best location for you, remove the tape and mount securely. However, after having them for 1.5 years, and about 25,000 miles, I noticed that the chrome has developed a whole bunch of black dots at the peg, next to the rubber parts, facing the front. Stuff doesn't come off eay, it appears that this is some form of intitial corrosion. No other OEM chrome parts show this.
