Mustang Motorcycle seats was founded in 1980 by Al Simmons and over the years consumers have dubbed their seats, “The Worlds Most Comfortable Motorcycle Seats."
Today in 2013, Mustang not only makes the most comfortable motorcycle seats in the industry, they are also focused on a bigger mission -- “It’s About The Ride!”
Mustang’s mission in helping motorcyclists have the best ride possible begins with their seats and extends into the following categories: Sissy Bar Pads, Driver Backrest Kits, Fender Bibs, Tank Bibs, Lid Covers, Saddlebags & Luggage, Rain Covers, Seat Covers, and Logo Items.
In this buying guide, we will walk you through this Mustang Seats line of products, injecting our opinions and customer feedback as we go... let’s begin with seats.
Mustang Motorcycle Seats are all hand made in Three Rivers, Massachusetts using steel, fiberglass, marine grade vinyl and other quality materials.

Initially Mustang Seats offered the following styles, which were bigger, more supportive, and more comfortable than any stock or aftermarket seat offered at that time:
Original One-Piece: This “original seat fits most Harley and Metric models and has all the features to make it our (and Mustang’s) most popular seat. It all begins with a single piece steel base on which the two piece foam seats attach. The front bucket seat is a full bucket 14” wide and the rear seat angles forward to support the drivers back. The seat is trimmed with a braided edge skirt and is available in either studded or vintage (non-studded) versions.
Paul McCullough has to say about his Original One-Piece seat for his 2009 Red Hot Sunglow FXSTC Softail:
“This is my second Mustang seat. Had the Wide Touring with Studs & Conchos on my old Shadow VT1100C. Just took my first long ride with the new seat on my FXSTC and couldn't be happier. Even after a couple hours riding I never felt the need to stand up and rest my butt. Mustang is simply the best for comfort, looks & quality.”
Original Two-Piece: This seat is very similar in style to the one-piece seat above, but also offers the ability to use this seat as a solo or two-up seat. The driver and passenger seats begin with a steel base that bolts to the stock seat locations. These plates are topped with two pieces of Mustang’s patented foam and finished off with a braided edge skirt, offered in studded and vintage styles.
Greg Shaw says, (SCBadVTX) from Rock Hill SC, United States, for a 2002 1800 VTX1800C:
“Now my wife can go a whole tank of gas before getting a numb butt. Excellent seat highly recommended.”
Wide Touring: This seat offers the ultimate in comfort and support with a 16” wide front solo seat with back support provided by the nose of the rear passenger seat, which creates a full 8” high backrest for the driver. The passenger pillion is a 13” wide bucket style seat supported with internal steel wings for ultimate comfort and support.
Ed White of Alabama has to say about his Wide Touring Mustang Seat: (divrdown1) from , AL, US, for a 1999 1500 Vulcan Classic:
“The first upgrade I made to my new '99 Vulcan after realizing that two hours in the stock saddle caused all lower extremities to go completely numb. Without a doubt the best money spent in 10 years with the same bike. Still looks great and still as comfortable as the day I bought it. Worth every penny !!!!”
Sport Touring: The Mustang Sport Touring seats come in either one or two pieces to suit most riders. It features a 15” wide driver bucket but narrows quickly towards the nose of the seat allowing the rider to touch the ground easier than with the wide touring seat. The passenger seat is 11.5” wide and both seats combined put the driver and passenger at the ideal cruising angle.
Dale (DGHonda) from Canada riding a 2005 Shadow Spirit says:
“Easy to install. Looks great on the bike considering the size of the passanger seat. Very comfortable, solid feel on the bike, holds you in place unlike the banana type factory seat.... AND the wife loves it :)”
Regal Duke: This seat features soft pillow top comfort with the perfect amount of folds, pleats and covered buttons atop Mustang’s patented split foam which sits firmly on a single baseplate. This seat maximizes driver back support and keep the passenger from sliding forward while still allowing the seat cover full freedom to flex and conform.
Lex from , PA, United States, for a 2007 XL883L Low Sportster wrote:
“Looking for a comfortable seat that won't burn a hole in your wallet, well look no farther, this seat is great, i road just under 1,200 miles with this seat from PA to Ohio and back big difference in comfort from the solo seat the bike came with.”
Cobra: The Cobra style seats fit Harley Davidsons from 1965 to present and are available in a long One Piece Seat, Solo Driver Seat, and Rear Thin Passenger Seat. Size varies a little by bike model, but most Cobra seats are 9” wide in the front and 6” wide in the rear.
Fastback: This is a super clean custom seat 13.5” wide, which is designed to sit the rider low. It is tapered in the back with just enough padding to comfortably carry a passenger.
Ed (spark1707) from Jersey City, NJ, United States, for a 2003 Blue 800 Vulcan Classic says:
“Much better back support than the stock seat. I also think it looks better than the stock seat. I have the National Cycle hardbags and the contour of the back of the seat flows nicely with NC bags.”
Squareback: This was Mustang’s first “low cut seat” for the driver with a squared off passenger seat that makes it functional for two-up riding. The front seat is 12” wide, the rear seat is 8” wide and the whole seat is covered with perfectly tailored Mustang seat cover.
Jay from Bunnell, FL, United States, for a 1995 Dyna Glide says:
“As other mustang seats I have owned in the past, OUTSTANDING!”
Mustang had received feedback asking for more sleek yet still comfortable seats. After extensive research and development, they launched these sexy yet very comfortable seats:
Tripper: With this seat, Mustang took their advanced comfort technology and created a seat that keeps all of the comfort properties while making a low riding, cool looking seat. This seat features detailed stitching on a highly durable synthetic glove-leather cover with a 12.5” front seat and 8” wide rear seat section. This was the first Mustangs seat to offer a low and mean seat that feels good for both the rider and passenger. Roy / Woodie Wood (roywood1) from , BC, Canada, for a 2005 / Black Raspberry 1600/1700 Road Star says:
“This seat looks great, and extreamly comfortable. I now sit in the bike and not on top of it, It's amazing what an inch or so can do for your ride and looks. I usually ride 2 up so it works for me.”
Cyclone: This is a three part system which begins with (1.) the Frame Mounting Plate, which allows the installation of the (2.) Cyclone Solo Seat with the use of (3.) the Hardware Mounting Kit. It features a carpeted bottom and edge trim to protect the frame and the fender. This mounting plate comes in a gloss black but can be painted to match your ride. The Cyclone Solo Seat is thin, compact and comfortable while giving riders a classic board racer look available in distressed black or distressed brown.
In 2012, Mustang launched two new style offerings for their seats, Diamond Stitch and Distressed Brown. Watch these two new styles in action in this diamond pattern and distressed brown Mustang Tripper Installation Video for Harley Davidsons.
In 2013, Mustang’s logo was revised and the company is moving quickly into the future with sexier, sleeker and more visually appealing seats, while holding fast to comfort that has made their brand famous.
In this short video clip, Marilyn Simmons (Mustang’s Marketing Director) talks about “The New Mustang in this Changes for 2013 Video.
