When I spoke with National Cycle, they suggested using tape or a cell phone screen protector in place of. I used neither without a problem. Tools required you may not have: 4mm hex key and torque wrench. WARNING - Torque specs are in Inch Pounds not Foot Pounds. A mistake here could be costly! TIP... put a thin film of silicone on the inside of the clamps and let it set up before installing them. They will hold on better and won't scratch your chrome covers. On the Shadow ACE 750 the upper portion of the mount actually sits on the upper tripple-tree. I though this would be a problem since I have the chrome cover but doesn't appear to be at this early stage. The trick toinstalling on the flared fork covers is to mount and tighten the lower mount first, then mount and slightly tighten the upper mount without the washer. Try installing them upside down... One sliced finger and a pinched hand later, I got the idea that there was something missing from the instructions. Other than that, it couldn't have been a simpler install. Very pleased with it. My only complaint is that $100 for a couple of straps and some chromed bolts is a tad high.
