Bill "Bill1100" Rich founded the popular
Shadow Riders Forum
|
The Shadow Riders Forum has been one of the most popular internet destinations for
motorcyclists for almost four years. Bill Rich of Dallas, Texas, who was riding a
1998 Honda Shadow 750 ACE (hence his screen name Bill750 at the time) started the
SRF as an alternative to the typical email list that was popular at that time
(March, 1998). His plan for the SRF was for it to be a community of people with a
love of riding motorcycles (primarily Honda Shadows) where they could share ideas,
make friends, and learn from the experience of others, all in an atmosphere of
openness and civility. After four years and almost 400,000 messages in the archive,
there are quite a few "members" still very active that were there when the forum
started. The SRF is an incredible resource for people new to riding or to Honda bikes
because of the experience of the "old dogs" who are happy to help.
The SRF has gone through many changes over the last four years. Most important,
it is no longer just a Honda Shadow resource. People with all sorts of brands and
models of bikes frequent the forum to share ideas and further the feeling of
camaraderie. It doesn't matter what you're riding - you're welcome in the SRF, and
chances are excellent that you'll get a friendly, helpful answer to most any question
about motorcycles (or anything else, for that matter) very quickly. Bill750 became
Bill1100 when he traded his 750 for an ACE Tourer in 1999. He stayed Bill1100 when
he bought a new BMW R1100RT in 2000.
Bill has often said that his greatest satisfaction from the SRF has been the
friendships that started on the forum. There are groups of people all over the
country that met because of the SRF. Businesses, riding clubs, and groups of
riding buddies, got their start by meeting on the Shadow Riders Forum.
The group of people that Bill regularly rides with, who call themselves
jokingly the "DFW MotoGang" all met on the SRF - they even have a private
forum they use for planning rides and staying in touch. There are groups like
this all over the U.S. - in other countries, too. People have the SRF logo on
their bikes, patches on their vests and jackets, t-shirts, caps, coffee mugs, and
pins. All because they enjoy being part of the community the SRF has become.
The SRF members helped generate over $1500 in contributions to the Ride for Kids a
couple of years ago.
Moderating the forum has been a challenge at times, as sometimes the rhetoric has
wandered off into inflammatory political or religious areas, which is contrary to the
purpose of the SRF. Bill and Dennis Welch (the only other moderator to stick with
the forum for an extended period) sometimes have to nudge the discourse back on
track. A number of other forums have been spawned from the SRF; some to discuss
specific models of bikes, some to engage in the flame wars not allowed on the SRF.
There are so many motorcycle forums on the internet today that it's hard to keep
track of them all. The Shadow Riders Forum was one of the first truly successful
forums and it continues to be one of the most popular on the web.

Thank you Bill!!!
