Jeremy and his riding buddy

I've always been a car guy. At the tender age of 13, my dad bought a '57 Chevy 2 door hardtop beater with a weak motor that was to be our project for the next few years. Upon heading off for college in Florida at 18, the car was finally ready and off I went with the hottest ride on campus. Alas, I got married after college and the car was simply a home down payment on wheels so it went bye bye and I became a home owner. Since that time, I've had a few more interesting rides including a few Triumph sports cars and I briefly owned a '74 Kawasaki KZ750 that was a basket case. That sort of put the taste in my mouth for the two wheels thing. As bad off as that bike was, I simply loved the freedom you get on the bikes. My dad also owned an old Harley Shovelhead that I had enjoyed putting around on from time to time. As I recall, I put more miles on it than Dad ever did.

Somewhere along the line, I made a friend in the Triumph club who I hung out with quite a bit. He and I were both gearheads who had a mutual appreciation for the mechanical things. At some point, he started talking about getting a bike. That got me thinking back to the KZ and Dad's old Harley and I decided I wouldn't mind getting back on 2 wheels. My buddy called me one day and said he was about to sign up for the MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) riders course and wanted to know if I wanted in as well. It was only $50, so I decided "what the hell" and said sure, sign me up. Upon taking the course, I found out how much I really didn't know and how much I needed to improve my skills. The course was held at Honda's plant in Alpharetta, GA where MSF has a full double range and no less than 40 250cc Nighthawk training bikes. It was a very nice facility and in the main classroom/office building, they had a brand new VTX 1300 orange retro setting in the entryway. Wow…did I ever fall in love with that bike. I was hooked. I sat on it every chance I got and it was only a few weeks after the class that I picked up my own new orange retro. My buddy also bought his bike at the same time and opted for a Kawasaki 800 drifter for it's classic lines.

He and I have spent MANY an afternoon since then tooling around the North Georgia mountains and countrysides just enjoying every moment of it. We've had a few close calls, but nothing to get excited over. Since we really started "seriously" riding at the same time, we are both at a similar skill level and have a natural way of looking out for each other. When I got my new pipes from Cruiser Customizing, he helped me get them on the bike and likewise, when he went to install his new risers, I was glad to assist. It's been a fun couple of years. I've since gotten out of the whole sports car thing and now just enjoy riding the bike.

Since my buddy has since started dating my wife's sister pretty seriously, I figured I'd better free him up a little and joined a local riding club called the Georgia Misfits. The first few times out with this group it rained every time and once we even hit what I'd consider monsoon like conditions. We rode though one "puddle" that was so deep a wave actually came up over my tank. Amazingly, we all stayed upright and got home safely. The VP of the club seemed to think I was a bad luck charm and gave me my official nickname - RAINMAN. Oh well….I suppose I could be called something worse, (we've got one guy they call Osama) so I sewed my patch on the vest and wear it with pride.

Looking back over the past couple of years (and 10k miles) I'm finding that riding is just about the most enjoyable thing I do. My wife has started riding with me only in about the last 3k miles so I've added a few things for her. I don't really know what it is that draws me out every weekend. I find myself looking at maps during the week figuring out which roads I want to try next. It seems there's always a new one that I've not yet experienced and some new area I want to check out. I think that just being out there makes me feel alive and connected to the world. I can honestly say that I'm happiest when I'm on two wheels.

Regards,

Jeremy "Rainman" Whitehead
