It takes a pair of pliers, at least when new. They look good and are a decent size. Well made. No velcro problems at all in contrast to some other reviewers. I only wish the ties at the ends of the bottom were more secure and possibly velcro to aid in removing the bags, which I like to do if staying overnight on the road.
