Last fall, I decided that I wanted the bike to loaf a bit more at highway speeds. Data suggest that my top end would increase roughly 5 mph per tooth removed. At the same time, I could not find a formula to predict loss of low end torque. Thus, I decided to "Take it easy". I'm not a speed demon. I removed 6 links from the chain, which turned out to be too few. Had I removed 8 links, I would not now be faced with the chore of returning the rear axle to "New" position and removing more links (Small goof). At 39 links, I have achieved my goal and more. While the bike can now do 80+ mph while asleep, I have seen no discernable loss at low end. My biggest surprise and pleasure came from calculating my gas mileage. It went from 50 mpg to almost 60 mpg. Nice Chrstmas present.
